Looking for gun control sources was harder than I thought.
There were so many things I found about congress and senate. Everything seemed
to be about Obama’s drive to regulate guns. With a lot of the tragic shootings I
wanted to see some opinions or plans at regulating guns. Obama had come up with
a gun policy shortly after the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting. Seeing that these
shootings were the ones that got me into the topic I wanted to utilize Obama’s
proposal. I liked the ideas he had and from them I could go into other opinions
and about people who disagree with his gun policies and why. Obama described his proposal as a common sense
measure. I thought it would be valuable to see his steps toward regulating guns.
After checking it out I think the president’s ideas are very well thought out.
I was trying to stick to pages with .edu, .org and .gov for better credibility
and I was able to come to the white house’s pdf of Obama’s proposal, which
gives a summary of the president’s proposal. The proposal includes Obama’s
plans to strengthen background check systems as well as ban military style
weapons. I am completely for many of these points and think they would be a
valuable to me. I could quote them onto my argument and back them with other
statistics and shootings.

This brings me to my next source. I’m planning on using some
of the shootings as sources. But I think it would be smarter to get that from a
newspaper or magazine. I was looking to compare the U.S. gun restriction to
other successful countries and hopefully get some statistics. I was able to
find an article on the PBS website which presented a comparison of the U.S.
regulations to those of Canada, Japan, Australia, etc… The article covers U.S.
constitutional laws supporting guns and shows the huge amount of the world’s
weapons The U.S. possesses. It also shows the similar types of shootings in
other countries and how the government reacted. This would be a valuable way to
argue for how guns should be regulated and what types of things the U.S. should
implement. One country that stood out to
me was Japan which has very low homicides and they also have a very restricted gun
and sword system.

John,
ReplyDeleteOn your first source, I think that this is a good source you found. I like this source for many reasons. First of all, it is credible, also because the President's proposals, and the President himself are right in the middle of this debate, and are leading the charge for more gun control. I think your point about using quotes from this site, is a great point, and that is something I would certainly do. Also, your point that you could then after this find sources that disagree with the president is a great point also. I think you could find other sources that not only disagree with the presidents proposals, but also find out what they are offering to stop gun violence themselves.
On your second source, this is also a good one, because it has statistics, etc. that are credible that you can use to help make your argument, and perhaps it has some statistics or other things that might go against your argument as well. Either way, this is a good source as well, because it is reliable, and also because it could bring a world type argument to your essay, that may help your argument. In fact, if you believe the statistics and other things in the article will help your argument, then you could bring them in to show people how other countries deal with guns, and gun violence and use that to perhaps help your argument.
Good find, you cant get much more creditable then the President right? That source will be great for building one strong side of the fence. Its a combination of great minds all focused on the same goal. So they are going to have plans and statements strongly backed by reason, logic, and facts. The second source I feel will yield similar results for your argument. Not that you cant have to many sources, but opposing views are important, and i need to add some into my blog as well. For example, there are outfitters, hunting guides, shooting ranges that will be affected by regulations. Maybe they will have to go out of business, putting people out of business is bad for the economy. I read something funny on facebook (very creditable btw) that read "making guns illegal will get them off the street and save lives? we should make meth and crack illegal too". just thought that was funny. and just to be clear I was joking about the facebook being creditable thing haha.
ReplyDeleteI'm really interested in this topic. I really wanted to do this topic. From what I can tell, you're for the increase of security measures on guns. Personally, I am on the other side of this debate. I think I will continue to read your posts. Even though I am on the other side of this debate, I respect your findings. If I could give one criticism, It would be from where you find your other sources. Personally, I have seen all the news and magazines. They're in the business to make money, and have a reputation to uphold. Of course these shootings are sad and should never have happened, but I don't think a news article about it would change my mind. I think if you used some abstract thinking about gun control, you'd be on the right path. I am not trying to give you criticism, more trying to give you another possible good source. I think if you found data about the psychology of men in general, and how aggressive they are, or studies done in other countries, like you were saying, would give me better grounds to switch sides. All I'm saying is that playing the guilt card can only work so many times.
ReplyDeleteBrandon thanks for your honesty! You know what I am having a tough time on this because both sides make a lot of sense. And your right I am asking for an increase in security measures; however, I am against totally banning guns. Right now i'd have to say I am with Obama's "common sense measures" because I believe there is only a certain amount of fire power people can responsibly use, in the sense that people shouldn't own assault rifles or armor penetrating bullets. I am mainly for the background checks which should be stricter and more security at schools! It's like selling alcohol to minors, people who are mentally challenged or have crimes shouldn't be allowed to have weapons, especially high powered assault rifles. I am seriously struggling with finding strong credible sources, but I really like your idea about aggressiveness and psychology. I can look into it and possibly show why people aren't capable of having guns without a lot of rules, regulations and security. Thanks for the feedback!
DeleteI am also very much interested in this argument, and I am also for gun control. Using president Obama’s gun control plan is the best idea I can think of. The president obviously had many, many industry professionals and experts weigh in and help him develop the plan. This will give a great place to start by seeing how they define what the specific problems are at this point. If they have solutions, they must have already specifically declared the problem. A great point to bring up would be to research if any other president was passionate about or even had a gun control policy. Definitely see the comparisons of the two plans. This will also give two definitions of the actual issues (perhaps then and now), and it would be interesting to see if they are the same.
ReplyDeleteAnother credible source would be the NRA. Unfortunately, they seem to be a huge stopping point in anything that wants to change and they are certainly vocal about their views. This would give a great reference to the opposing views, and to see what this bill is up against.
I think it is great that you are writing about something that is happening right now. It makes your blog more important to read because it’s something so prevalent in the media right now. I like that you used Obama’s proposal in your research. I haven’t really understood all of what’s been proposed, I just haven’t really paid attention but you have made it a little more understandable. I think there are certain measures that should be taken to restrict some guns like, who really need an automatic assault weapon? However a home defense shot gun, or the like, should be a right for any citizen. That’s just my, scared when my husband works at night, opinion though.
